Alternatives to Replacing a Driveway: What Else Can You Do?
If the base of your driveway is sound, there are several alternatives to replacing it: a thorough clean, local repairs, a full restoration with two coats of colour, a resurfacing overlay, or a partial rebuild of the worst section combined with restoring the rest. Which one fits depends on whether the problem is dirt, worn colour, local damage or structural failure.
Send us a photo and the m²Why look for alternatives at all?
Because replacing a driveway means demolishing something that may still be doing its job. Breaking out concrete, removing rubble and pouring a new slab is noisy, dusty and disruptive, and it changes nothing if the real complaint was the colour.
For owners who live abroad, a replacement also means a long building site at a property they cannot supervise. The alternatives below are less invasive, and most of them can be arranged from photos.
Alternative 1: Is a deep clean enough?
It is when the original colour is intact under the grime. Pressure washing lifts algae, dust and staining, and a surface that looked hopeless can come up surprisingly well.

It is not enough when the colour itself has faded, because washing reveals the surface rather than renewing it. Our comparison of pressure washing and full restoration explains the difference.
Alternative 2: When do spot repairs make sense?
When the damage is isolated: one cracked corner, a small pothole by the gate, a chipped kerb. Repairing just those spots keeps the rest of the drive untouched.
The catch is appearance. A repaired patch on a faded surface tends to stand out, which is why combining repairs with a recolour helps the whole drive read as one.
Alternative 3: What does a full restoration change?
It changes everything you see without changing anything structural. After cleaning, repairs and edging, two coats of synthetic resin paint give one deep, even colour, while the slab, the pattern and the levels stay as they are.
This is the alternative we specialise in, described on our patio refresh service page. It suits the large group of drives that are sound but tired.
Alternative 4: What about a resurfacing overlay?
An overlay adds a new layer of material on top of the existing slab. It can cover a surface that is too rough or broken for a coating alone, but it raises the finished level, which matters at gates, doors, steps and drains.
Overlays are new surface construction and fall outside our service. If you consider one, ask the installer how the extra height will be handled at thresholds and drainage points.
Alternative 5: Can you rebuild part and restore the rest?
Yes, and it is often the most sensible compromise when one area has failed and the rest has not. A contractor who lays concrete replaces the damaged section; once it is ready for coating according to the product data sheet, the whole drive is restored so that old and new match in colour.
The order is important: rebuild first, restore second. Talk to both contractors before either starts.
When is replacement still the only answer?
When the base has failed across the drive: widespread sinking, slabs that rock, cracks that keep widening, or damage from roots or washout throughout. None of the alternatives above deals with that.
Our page on clean, restore or replace gives the checks that separate these cases.
Do the same alternatives apply to communal driveways?
They do, with the added step of community approval. A cleaner, restored communal drive is often achievable without the disruption of a rebuild, which matters to residents who need daily access.
A restoration can also be phased, so that part of the drive stays open while another part is treated. Our communal surfaces page explains how communities handle the decision under the Ley de Propiedad Horizontal.
Frequently asked questions
What is the cheapest alternative to replacing a driveway?
Usually cleaning, if the colour is still there, followed by spot repairs for isolated damage. We do not publish figures on this site, and each option has a different scope, so compare what each includes. Our price site explains the indicative rate for a full restoration.
Can I just repair the cracks and leave the rest?
You can, but repaired spots often stand out on a faded surface. Combining repairs with a recolour keeps the drive looking uniform. If the cracks are wide or growing, they need assessing first, because they may indicate movement.
Is a driveway overlay better than painting?
They do different things. An overlay adds new material and raises the level; painting after cleaning and repair keeps the existing levels. An overlay suits surfaces too rough for coating alone, while restoration suits sound surfaces with worn colour. Overlays are outside our service.
Can part of a driveway be replaced and the rest kept?
Yes. A concrete contractor rebuilds the failed section, and once it is ready for coating according to the data sheet, the whole drive is restored for a consistent colour. Plan the order with both contractors in advance. Getting the order wrong can mean the new section is not ready when the restoration is booked.
Does restoring a driveway change its height?
No. Restoration cleans, repairs and recolours the existing surface. Levels at gates, doors and drains stay as they are, which is one of its practical advantages over an overlay. Gates still swing, doors still close and water still runs towards the same drains as before.
When is there no alternative to replacement?
When the base has failed across the surface: widespread sinking, rocking slabs, widening cracks or extensive root or washout damage. In that situation, the cause has to be dealt with and a new surface laid by a contractor who builds them.
Which alternative is least disruptive?
Cleaning, followed by restoration. Neither involves demolition, heavy machinery or new concrete. Restoration takes longer than a wash because of repairs and drying times set by the product data sheet. For owners abroad, both can be arranged from photos with access through a key holder.
Can I combine cleaning now and restoration later?
Yes. Cleaning first shows the true condition and lets you decide without pressure. A later restoration includes its own cleaning as preparation, so some effort will be repeated. A wash can also be a sensible holding step before a sale or a busy rental season, while you decide.
Are these alternatives suitable for block paving?
Yes, as long as the pavers are firm. Block paving can be cleaned, have its joints and edges dealt with, and be recoloured. If pavers have sunk or move, they need re-bedding first, which is base work. Photos of the joints and any loose blocks help us judge which applies.
How do I choose between the alternatives?
Identify the main problem: dirt, faded colour, local damage or structural failure. Each points to a different option. Send photos and square metres, and we will tell you which alternative we think fits, including when it is not one we offer.
